Stage 1 vs Stage 2 Remap: Which Is Right for Your Car?
Confused about the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuning? We break down what each stage involves, typical power gains, and which setup suits different drivers.
When customers contact Naked Frog for the first time, one of the most common questions is: 'Should I go Stage 1 or Stage 2?' The answer depends on your car, your goals, and your budget. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
Stage 1 Remap
A Stage 1 remap is a software-only modification — no hardware changes required. The ECU map is rewritten to extract the maximum safe power from your standard engine and turbo. For most turbocharged cars, you can expect gains of 20–40bhp and a proportional increase in torque.
Stage 1 is ideal if you want a noticeable improvement without spending on hardware, or if the car is still used daily and needs to remain reliable and tax-compliant.
Stage 2 Remap
Stage 2 tuning pairs the ECU remap with supporting hardware upgrades — typically a higher-flow induction kit, an upgraded intercooler, and a freer-flowing exhaust downpipe. These modifications remove the bottlenecks that limit how far the software can push the engine.
Power gains vary widely, but 50–80bhp increases on a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine are common. The car will also feel substantially different to drive — more responsive, more exciting, louder.
Which Should You Choose?
Start with Stage 1 if your car is standard and you want a cost-effective performance boost. Move to Stage 2 if you've already done supporting mods, or if you're building a track or fast road car and want the maximum the engine can safely deliver.
